Our Malawian Friend Promise Mchenga

Promise with First Congregational Church Friends

Promise Mchenga from Malawi has become a friend of many at our Cheshire, CT church.  His friendly face is seen often on Sunday mornings.

Travel Planning

Hello Friends,

Well, I have updated my Typhoid and Hep A shots.  Glad that's over with!  Malaria prevention pills are on order as is an antibiotic.

Just finished reading From Microsoft to Malawi by Michael Buckler.  It reminded me of the joys and frustrations of attempting to assist students who have so many challenges just with everyday living.  It also reminded me of the friendliness and warmth of the Malawian people.  I recommend it as enjoyable reading.  Profits from the book are helping with college expenses for Michael's three Malawian "sons".

My trip is in less than three weeks.  Preparations are going well.

My biggest challenge at this point is learning enough Chichewa to be able to understand and communicate with folks who don't speak any English.  Fortunately, the Peace Corps has free materials from their training courses for volunteers which is helping a lot.

The trip to the airport will work out well, as my cousin, Dick Pierson has kindly allowed me to park my car in the driveway of his New Jersey home for the 3 weeks I will be away.  What a gift that is!  Taking a taxi to the airport from his house will mean I will have assistance with the three heavy bags I plan to bring along filled with school backpacks, shoes, and other items for the students.

Promise and Nellie report that preparations for the wedding are coming along well.

Promise started his research project at Dzaleka Refugee Camp this week.

Until soon,
Amy

The Next Adventure Begins!

Hello Friends,

With the help of friendly and patient Cecil of the South Africa Airlines Call Center, I was able to book my ticket to Malawi.  Cecil's mother's name was Amy so we had a personal connection rather than just a perfunctory business transaction.  This will undoubtedly the first of the many travelling graces I will experience in the weeks to come.

My flight leaves JFK on Monday, July 14th at 11:15 a.m.  (Not sure how I will get to the airport yet....not crazy about Monday rush hour traffic!  Maybe leave the night before and spend the night near the airport???)

I thank you for your interest in my trip.  It promises to be an exciting one, culminating in the wedding of my dear Godson, Promise Mchenga to Nellie Lewis!

Until soon,
Amy
